What Is the Fruiting Body?

The fruiting body is the part of the mushroom you'd recognize — the cap, stem, and visible structure that grows above (or on) the substrate. This is where the mushroom concentrates its bioactive compounds:

  • Triterpenes — compounds specific to certain mushrooms like reishi

Mushrooms have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years, and the research on their benefits — from Chinese medicine to modern clinical studies — has almost always focused on the fruiting body.

What Is Mycelium?

Mycelium is the root-like network of fungal threads that grows through the growing medium (substrate). In commercial supplement production, mycelium is typically grown on a grain substrate — usually oats, brown rice, or sorghum — and then dried and powdered without separating the grain from the fungal material.

This is called mycelium on grain (MOG).

The Problem with Mycelium on Grain

When you consume a mycelium-on-grain product, you're consuming a significant amount of starch from the grain substrate. Multiple independent analyses have found that MOG products can contain 50–80% starch by weight.

That starch is inert — it's not a bioactive mushroom compound. It dilutes every active ingredient in the product.
